The United States will not deploy the THAAD intermediate-range missile interceptor system in Eastern Europe to help Ukraine shoot down Russian missiles and drones, as it does in Israel, Pentagon deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said at a briefing on Tuesday, October 15.

She explained this decision by the fact that the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East are different, and they require different means.

Different opportunities, different wars, different regions. Obligations to Israel and Ukraine are also different. We have a long-standing partnership regarding Israel’s self-defense,” Singh said.

She added that Joe Biden’s administration continues to support both Ukraine and Israel in their various needs.

Singh did not answer the journalist’s clarifying question about how the war in Israel differs from the war in Ukraine, where Russia launches ballistic missiles by analogy with Iran.

On October 13, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin authorized the deployment of the THAAD battery and associated US troops to bolster Israel’s air defenses following the April 13 and October 1 attacks by Iran.

According to Defense Express, THAAD can intercept ballistic missiles at a range of up to 200 km and at an altitude of 100-150 km.

According to The Military Balance 2023, there are only 42 such installations, or a total of seven batteries, of which one battery is deployed in South Korea, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
