The publication cites data from the Kiel Institute, according to which Denmark is the country that provided the most support to Ukraine as a percentage of GDP.
Therefore, according to a member of the defense committee, Simon Collerup, “it is natural that we see a stabilization of the level of support that is provided.”
“We chose to be one of the countries that took the lead at the beginning of the war by providing large-scale support. I also think it’s fair to say that this support is somewhat in excess of what the size of our country actually dictates. So I think it’s only natural that support is declining,” he said.
Meanwhile, another member of the defense committee, Stinus Lindgreen, who requested the report, believes that now is not the time to cut support for Ukraine.
“I think we should return to the level we were at in previous years… If you look at the situation in Ukraine now, it is critical. Now is not the time to reduce our ambitions. Neither in Denmark nor at the international level,” he said.
For his part, Kollerup is convinced that other countries should take the lead in providing aid to Ukraine.
“We are a small country with a healthy economy and high decision-making capacity, so we were actually able to find the funds in our economy to provide large-scale support early on. But I also believe there is room for other countries to take the lead,” he added.
In total, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Denmark has provided Ukraine with 70 billion Danish kroner (9.38 billion euros) in aid.
It will be recalled that in November, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Estonia announced on November 13 that they would finance joint package of weapons for Ukraine, which will be purchased in the USA.
Before that, the government and the relevant parliamentary committee of Denmark on Tuesday agreed on the details a new, 28th package of military aid to Ukraine in the total amount of 1.4 billion Danish kroner (217 million dollars).
