Details: After announcing the decision to stop delivering letters earlier this year, PostNord said it would cut 1,500 jobs in Denmark and remove 1,500 red mailboxes amid an increasingly digitized society.
Describing Denmark as “one of the most digital countries in the world”, the company said demand for letters had “fallen sharply” while online shopping continued to grow. This fact prompted the company to focus on parcel delivery.
Most of the mailboxes have already been dismantled – 1,000 of them were snapped up immediately when they went on sale earlier this month. Another 200 mailboxes will be auctioned in January.
PostNord, which will continue to deliver letters in Sweden, said it will offer refunds for unused Danish postage stamps for a limited time.
Danes will still be able to send letters using Dao’s services.
According to Danish law, the possibility to send letters must exist. This means that if Dao stops delivering letters, the government will be required to appoint someone else to do the job.
It will be recalled that in March last year, the main national postal operator of Germany, Deutsche Post, stopped using domestic flights for the transportation of letters after almost 63 years.
And in June, the Bundestag approved a reform of postal legislation that allowed Deutsche Post to spend more time transporting letters
