Details: Last week it became known that military and civilian planes began systematically transporting soldiers and materiel from Denmark to Greenland.
According to DR, there was broad political will to fight if the US attacked. The readiness to repel the attack was not only on the part of the Danish government, but also on the part of the opposition parties.
At the same time, neither the government nor the opposition parties considered an American military strike on Greenland possible, although at that time US President Donald Trump did not want to rule out such a development.
The large-scale military operation referred to in the order continues to unfold in Greenland under the name Arctic Endurance.
According to the document, the operation is that the Armed Forces should “increase the presence and level of activity in Greenland to demonstrate the readiness and ability to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom”. It also provides for the possibility of sending even more soldiers and military resources to the island.
The order also mentions a plan for the defense of Greenland, which can be implemented if necessary.
According to DR, the operation has been planned for some time, but recent events have led to its sudden acceleration.
The order also states that the Danish military currently stationed in Greenland are carrying KUP ammunition, which is designed to allow soldiers to immediately engage in combat if necessary.
Arctic Endurance has been working around the clock since the order was issued. According to the Danish Ministry of Defense, “significant” army forces are currently in Greenland.
The publication notes that the ministry refused to comment on the “allegations about the content of possible confidential documents”, noting only that “the purpose of the increased presence of Denmark is exclusively to conduct joint exercises with allied forces in the special arctic conditions of Greenland”.
At the same time, the Defense Department added that Arctic Endurance will continue throughout 2026 “on land, on water and in the air.”
Prehistory:
- On January 21, at a speech in Davos, US President Donald Trump promised not to use military force to seize Greenland, but reiterated his desire to control the island.
- He later said he had laid the groundwork for a future deal on Greenland in which he does not plan to impose tariffs against European countries.
- In turn, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen outlined the red lines of such an agreement with the US: the status of a sovereign state is not discussed.
