In the next academic year, basic general military training of students will be added to the program of 3rd courses of Ukrainian universities.
This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Mykhailo Vynnytskyi, in a commentary on News LIVE. According to him, basic general military training will begin to be added to the curricula of third-year students from the 2025-2026 academic year. Students will learn to handle weapons, defend themselves and provide medical aid.
“Obviously, we are not talking about first-year students, because our first-year students are mostly seventeen years old. It is most likely that it will be the 3rd year, because they are already 19-20 years old, they are adult boys,” said Mykhailo Vynnytskyi.
He also emphasized that the students will not be threatened by mobilization.
“The mobilization age remains 25. It’s just that a person who graduates from higher education should be able to handle weapons, know where meetings are held in case of need, how to defend oneself, how to provide first aid. All these things are included in basic general military training,” the official said.
According to the deputy minister, in accordance with the legislative changes, the basic general military training of students in higher education institutions should be introduced from 2025, it is already included in the state budget. This initiative is a continuation of the reformatting of the subject “Defense of Ukraine” in high school. Now the system is being developed, training grounds are being prepared, and the training of instructors will begin in January.
Earlier, the Ministry of Education and Science approved the updated curriculum of the subject “Defense of Ukraine”: now students of grades 10-11, in particular, will study weapons, military equipment and protection of civilians.
Pupils of grades 10-11 will study the subject “Defense of Ukraine” in specially created “cells”, of which there will be about 1,200 units throughout the country.
