One million hryvnias and a scholarship program for university students will be provided to the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas (IFNTUNG) Ukrainian subsidiary of MND “Horizons”. In June of this year, the educational institution became the object of rocket fire from Russia and the campus suffered significant destruction.
Building 7, which houses the International Drilling and Training Center, equipped with the DrillSim 5000 simulator, was hit directly by the missile “Iskander”. This important institution was practically destroyed in the early morning of June 22. The structure of the building is broken, although, at first glance, the damage does not look so fatal. Fortunately, the attack happened around 4:00 a.m., so there were no casualties.
The shock wave was so strong that almost all the buildings in the huge complex were damaged. In total, more than 800 windows and a thousand square meters of roofs were destroyed, 14 buildings were visibly destroyed. The sewage system in the entire complex was also damaged. At this time, it is difficult to say how much the total renovation will cost, as structural engineers and experts are still assessing the condition of several buildings.
One million hryvnias donated by the Ukrainian branch of MND will go towards the restoration of the school grounds, with which the company has been cooperating for many years. In the past, local students even came to practice at the MND office in the Czech city of Godonin.
“We provided scholarships and always allowed two students to intern in Godonin during the holidays. Unfortunately, it ended during the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Lukash Svozil, head of the Ukrainian branch of MND. Now the student support program will resume, but in a different format. Internships in Godonin will not take place yet, but the university commission will select students who will receive scholarships from MND. These scholarships will amount to five thousand hryvnias per month, which is a pleasant bonus for any student.
Help from former students of the city and its enterprises
In the meantime, IFNTUNG and the city are raising funds to help the university reopen and train young people to work in the energy sector.
“In these difficult times, the community of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas appeals to our graduates, partners and everyone who wants to help and financially support us in overcoming the consequences of yet another Russian crime,” says a message on the university’s Facebook page.
The attack on the university was part of a larger Russian attack on energy infrastructure in southern and western Ukraine that night. In addition to the university, other targets were energy facilities in the Zaporizhzhia and Lviv regions.
The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russia used a total of 16 missiles and 13 drones during the attack. Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted seven out of ten Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles, one of two missiles “Iskander-K”, all four missiles “Caliber” and 13 drones. However, the damage from the attack is still significant.
