Legal advisers of the European Commission, the European Foreign Affairs Service, the Council of Europe, Ukraine and 37 States have identified the key parameters for the creation of a special tribunal on the crime of aggression against Ukraine, as well as the most important elements of the Schumana Charter – the main legal document that will regulate the activity of the Tribunal. The Ukrainian delegation was headed by the deputy head of the Presidential Office Irina Wise.
“This applies not only to Ukraine. It’s about the global justice and message we send to the world. That is why we want the special tribunal to be successful, and so we ask those who are interested in the salvation of the world order, to join us in the case of justice. The launch of the tribunal will prove that we are serious about ensuring peace and international law, that the culprits of the crime of aggression will be punished and justice will be restored, ”said Irina Wise.
After the start of work, the tribunal will have the authority to hold the Russian political and military leaders who are of the highest responsibility for the crime of aggression.
“When Russia decided to violate the borders of Ukraine by neglecting the UN Charter, it committed one of the most serious international crimes – a crime of aggression. Now justice is approaching. Justice for Ukraine. We have laid the legal basis for the creation of a special tribunal, ”said the President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Lyen.
Council of Europe Secretary General Allen Berce called the results of today’s progress, which will also be felt by the next generations of Ukrainians.
“The creation of a special tribunal on aggression against Ukraine within the Council of Europe will enable our international partners, including Ukraine and the European Union, to fully use our experience and knowledge in human rights and the rule of law around the world,” Alen Berce added.
