The Pentagon’s acting inspector general found that the head of the department, Pete Hegseth, could have endangered the American military by publishing details of future attacks on the Signal messenger.

Source: as “European Truth” writes, CNN reports this with reference to four sources familiar with the inspector general’s report

Details: According to CNN, a report on the scandal, dubbed “Signal-gate,” indicated that Hegseth should not have used Signal to communicate military operations and that senior Defense Department officials need better training in the protocols.

The report also details how the Pentagon chief shared sensitive information about military operations with individuals who were not authorized to receive it and failed to preserve those communications as required by federal law.

Among other things, the Pentagon’s inspector general found that Hegseth had shared details of US military operations in Yemen through Signal with several others who were not authorized to see the information.

The report also indicated that the military plans revealed by the Pentagon chief were taken from a US Central Command document that was classified as secret at the time.

Two sources told CNN that the ramifications of Hegseth’s actions are not entirely clear, since the inspector general concluded that the defense secretary has the authority to declassify the information. Hegseth himself claimed that he made a quick decision to share this information, although there is no documentary evidence of this.

It will be recalled that in March 2025, the editor of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, told how he was accidentally added to a Signal group chat with high-ranking US officials.

In the chat, the Pentagon chief discussed detailed plans for attacks against the Houthi rebels, including exact timing and weapons — which critics of the Trump administration say could violate classified information protocols and threaten national security.

The media later learned that Hegseth had about a dozen such chats at Signal, where he exchanged official information.

Against the background of the scandal, Trump’s national security advisor Michael Waltz, who added the journalist to the chat, lost his position.
