The Christmas fast, one of the longest and most important in the church calendar, will begin on November 15 and last until December 24.
This year it will take place according to the New Julian calendar, according to which Christmas is celebrated on December 25.
Fasting is not only about strict restriction of food, but also about inner cleansing – repentance, prayer, forgiveness and giving up entertainment.
Meat, eggs and dairy products are strictly prohibited in the diet during the Christmas fast. From Wednesday to Friday, believers observe dry food — they consume only raw vegetable products without heat treatment.
On other days, hot food without oil or with oil is allowed, and on weekends – fish and a glass of wine.
The diet of fasting days consists of seasonal vegetables and fruits, cereals, legumes, nuts, dried fruits and mushrooms.
It is important to observe three cycles of fasting – from November 15 to December 6, from December 7 to 18, and from December 19 to 24, with stricter restrictions closer to Christmas.
A special fasting regime is in effect on December 24 – until the first star appears, no food is consumed, and then they begin Christmas Eve in the family circle.
The Church exempts the elderly, the sick, pregnant women, those who are breastfeeding, children under 14 years of age, as well as residents of the frontline territories from the obligation to fast.
We will remind you that today, November 10, 2025, the world celebrates World Science Day and World Youth Day.
Also on November 6, 2025, Ukraine celebrates the liberation of Kyiv from the Nazi occupiers.
