Details: It is reported that the main task of the general is to ensure political loyalty and proper management of personnel.
General Chen Hui previously worked in the Air Force, and in April 2023 he became the Political Commissar of the Air and Space Forces of the PLA. His transfer to the new post has caused surprise among analysts, because Chen has no experience in the ground forces.
Hui will replace Qin Shutong, whose reasons for resignation have not been disclosed, as have his future assignments. Qin’s predecessor is known to have retired at the age of 65, which is the unofficial retirement age for senior military officials.
The paper reported that ground forces commander Li Qiaomin and former political commissar Qin Shutong were not present at the ceremony, raising further questions.
Literally: “China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong (Xi Jinping – Ed. military-political working conference – a conclave, which he previously used to assert his power over the People’s Army of Ukraine”.
Prehistory:
- China’s People’s Liberation Army, the largest in the world, has recently been in the spotlight due to corruption scandals. They implicated two defense ministers, several high-ranking officials associated with the Missile Forces, and Miao Hua, who worked for the Central Military Commission.
- The developments come amid increased military exercises near Taiwan, which China seeks to annex by force. The US Department of Defense stresses that corruption could make it difficult for Xi Jinping to achieve his goal of modernizing China’s armed forces.
