Players were ordered to leave the pitchCredit: Shutterstock Editorial But the game was suspended after 12 minutes as a medical team rushed to a Charlton fan’s aid in the Covered End.
Referee Matthew Donohue then ordered the players to leave the pitch in the 19th minute due to the distressing scenes.
And the supporter was taken away on a stretcher by paramedics after 10 minutes of treatment.
The game was eventually abandoned, with Charlton releasing a statement on X.
It read: “Due to a medical emergency in the crowd, today’s match has been abandoned.
“We thank you for your patience and understanding. Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to the supporter affected and thank our medical team and first responders.
“Information on when the match will be rescheduled will be announced in due course.”
A minute’s applause was held for Billy Bonds and Marvin Hinton before the encounter got underway at the Valley.

And Charlton had already seen Lloyd Jones pick up a yellow card in the early exchanges.
But then the clash was suspended when it became clear that a fan required immediate medical attention.
Charlton sealed their return to the Championship after beating Leyton Orient in the League One play-off final in May.
But Nathan Jones’ side have been without a win since sealing a narrow victory against West Brom last month.
They have since suffered defeats to Wrexham, Southampton, Stoke and table-topping Coventry.
Portsmouth have also been aiming to bounce back from a poor run of form.
After beating 10-man Millwall, Pompey were consigned to a heavy loss by Sheffield United and were on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline against Bristol City in the Championship last week.
