During the talks published on the site of the Brovar City Council, Igor Sapozhko thanked the German partners for their support that they provide the Ukrainian city and congratulated the mayor on re -election. “I am grateful that even during such a difficult time you support us and help develop the community,” he said.
The parties discussed the results of the reissue between cities and the active participation of Brovary in international financing programs. The Brovary Mayor noted the importance of cultural and educational exchanges that contribute to the strengthening of communities. New visits of Ukrainian delegations, as well as children’s health programs, sports events and cultural events are planned for 2025.
Mayor Thomas Nietzsche emphasized that the community of the German twin city supports cooperation with Brovary and in the future plans to raise the level of partnership to the format of solidarity interaction. “After the war, we can make our relations even more formalized and strengthen Ukraine’s support at the institutional level,” he said.
One of the important areas of support of the Brovar community was the funding of critically necessary needs. According to Thomas Nietzsche, the possibility of allocation of funds for the purchase of medical equipment for hospital in Brovary within the limits of small and medium grants of the Global. There are also plans to help city schools within this program.
The mayor of Brovary expressed his gratitude for such an initiative, emphasizing that even small grants help to solve urgent problems of the community. He also hoped that Yen’s representatives will have more time during a future visit to Brovary in May to see the city’s development with his own eyes.
The issue of security situation in communities and opportunities for cooperation with the police was raised separately. “We understand that after the war we will expect many challenges, including social adaptation of the military, prevention of crime and providing public order. It is important for us to take the experience of your law enforcement agencies,” the mayor of Brovary emphasized.
Another important aspect of the meeting was the issue of the Ukrainian community in Ene. Thomas Nietzsche said that since the first days of the war she was actively working on mobilization of assistance for Ukraine. It was through this initiative that the Ena-UA Association was created, which continues to contribute to the development of links between cities.
At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed their readiness to continue joint initiatives and organize community exchange. “Human contact is of great importance. It is precisely such meetings as ours today help to build confidence and understanding,” the mayor said.
Partnership that lasts from 2022
Brovary and German cities of Ena and Erlangen (with this city also cooperates the Brovar community), continue to strengthen partnerships that began in the summer of 2022. Since then, cooperation has covered a wide range of directions: from supplying medical equipment to educational exchanges and humanitarian aid.
In November 2022, with the support of Jena, Erlangen and the German Society of the Engase Global for the Brovar Hospital, equipment was purchased in the amount of more than UAH 3.9 million. In the winter of 2023, the community received a heat fan and a generator to support energy. In March of that year, cities were officially fixed by a partnership with a solidarity agreement.
June 2023 became significant thanks to the visit of the Brovar delegation to Germany, where Ukrainians got acquainted with the functioning of municipal enterprises and educational institutions. In the fall of 2023, the partnership continued to expand: in October, the city of Ena transferred the Brovar community for transportation of students of the princely Lyceum, and on the eve of Christmas, the children of the community received humanitarian gifts from residents of the German city.
The beginning of 2024 was marked by the official visit of mayor Igor Sapozhko and the Brovar delegation to Yena and Erlangen, which discussed the issues of energy, housing and economic development. In April, the Jenaua EV Association was created in Ene to deepen cooperation. That same month, five Brovary teachers of German were educational exchange in schools, having read the local teaching methods.
In October 2024, representatives of the city of Ena, headed by Matthew Mitas, visited Brovary, meeting with local residents and internally displaced persons in a modular town. They also visited the Brovar Hospital, where the equipment was purchased with the support of German partners.
