British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said lawmakers will have the opportunity to vote on the final number of troops deployed to Ukraine in the event of a peace deal.

The announcement came after Britain and France announced their readiness to send troops if a peace deal is struck following a meeting in Paris.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticized Starmer for not making a statement to parliament about the agreements reached.

“We (at the meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” in Paris – ed.) have made real progress on the security guarantees that are vital to ensuring a just and durable peace. Together with President Macron and President Zelensky, we agreed on a declaration of intent regarding the deployment of forces in the event of a peace agreement. We will put the details in the statement as soon as possible,” Starmer said.

The British Prime Minister promised to inform the Chamber about the development of the situation, and “if the troops are deployed in accordance with the signed declaration, I will put this issue to a vote in the Chamber.”

Starmer was also asked whether the troops would take part in hostilities. The Prime Minister replied:

“The deployment will be only after the cease-fire, it will be to support Ukraine’s capabilities, conduct deterrence operations and build and protect military nodes.”

“The number will be determined according to our military plans that we are developing and we expect the support of other members. So, I will put that figure before the House before we deploy the troops,” he added.

On January 6, negotiations of the “Coalition of the Willing” on the plan to end the Russian-Ukrainian war and guarantees for Ukraine were completed in Paris. The leaders of the EU and NATO, leaders of 27 countries, representatives of Turkey, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, as well as the special representative of the US President Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner took part in the meeting.

As a result of the meeting, the Paris Declaration on “reliable security guarantees for a strong and lasting peace in Ukraine” was published, which, in particular, provides for the deployment of multinational forces in Ukraine after the cessation of hostilities “with the proposed support of the United States.”

New details regarding the contribution from the leading states of the Coalition have also become known. In addition to the deployment of so-called pacification forces on the territory of Ukraine, Britain and France are preparing to create military centers there and build protected facilities for the production of weapons to support Ukraine’s defense needs, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

An unnamed French official told The Wall Street Journal that Anglo-French military centers in Ukraine would provide channels through which the work of Ukraine’s allies could be organized and coordinated.

Russia opposed the presence of NATO forces in Ukraine after the end of the war, but the US president and his entourage expressed optimism about the possibility of persuading the Kremlin to agree.
