Details

Jeff Bezos’ company Blue Origin launched its new rocket on its first test flight Thursday, sending a prototype satellite into orbit thousands of miles above Earth.

The start took place after two interruptions in the countdown, which delayed the start for an hour. It went well in part, with the first stage’s seven methane engines reportedly shutting down as planned, allowing the second stage to separate.

Reference

The New Glenn rocket is named after the first American to orbit the Earth. The 98-meter rocket has been in development for years and was funded by Bezos’ company. It carries an experimental platform designed to place satellites or launch them into orbit. The rocket is designed to carry spacecraft and possibly astronauts into orbit and even to the moon.

Founded 25 years ago by Bezos, Blue Origin has been launching paying passengers to the edge of space since 2021, including himself. Smaller rockets named after the first American in space, Alan Shepard, are used for short flights from Texas.

Blue Origin has invested more than $1 billion in the New Glenn launch pad, renovating the space station’s historic Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral. The site is located 14 kilometers from the company’s control centers and the rocket plant, outside the gates of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

Bezos, who attended the launch with Mission Control, declined to disclose his personal investment in the program and said he does not see Blue Origin as competition for Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Meanwhile, SpaceX’s CEO posts to congratulate him on the successful launch. A message that can also be read as sarcasm towards Jeff Bezos: “Congratulations on reaching orbit on your first attempt,” he writes.

We will remind

UNN previously reported that Blue Origin was forced to postpone the debut launch of the New Glenn rocket from January 14 to January 16 due to technical problems and weather conditions. The 98-meter rocket is scheduled to be launched from Cape Canaveral between 01:00 and 04:00.
