Details: The telephone conversation between Witkoff and Ushakov took place on October 14 and lasted a little more than five minutes.

During the conversation with Ushakov, Witkoff told his Russian counterpart that he had deep respect for Putin and that he had told Trump that he believed Russia had always wanted a peace deal.

The envoy of the US president mentioned the upcoming visit of Volodymyr Zelensky and suggested that Putin talk to Trump before this meeting.

“Zelensky is coming to the White House on Friday. I will go to that meeting because they want me to be there, but I think if possible we should talk to your boss before that Friday meeting,” Witkoff was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.

Ushakov asked Witkoff if it would be “useful” for Putin to call Trump.

Witkoff said yes, and also recommended that Putin congratulate Trump on reaching the Gaza peace agreement (this happened shortly before the conversation between Witkoff and Ushakov), that Russia supported it, and that he respected the US president as a man of peace.

“Then it’s going to be a really good call,” Witkoff said. (The conversation between Trump and Putin really took place on October 16 – two days after the conversation between Witkoff and Ushakov. After it, the US president, who had repeatedly criticized Putin before that, expressed his desire to meet with him in Budapest.)

During the same conversation, Trump’s envoy discussed with Putin’s aide the potential terms of a “peace deal” between Russia and Ukraine, which were then reflected in a 28-point plan that was prepared with the direct involvement of the Kremlin without the knowledge of Kyiv or its European allies.

“I’ll tell you, I know what it takes to conclude a peace agreement. Donetsk and maybe Desb will exchange territories. But I say that instead of such conversations, let’s talk with more hope, because I think we will reach an agreement. The president (Trump. – Ed.) will give me a lot of freedom and authority to reach an agreement,” Witkoff said.

It will be recalled that the American edition of The Wall Street Journal in its material described the reconstruction of the events that led to the appearance in the US administration of a 28-point plan for a peaceful settlement of the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
