The European Union is working on a new, 15th package of sanctions against Russia, which will primarily target the so-called “shadow fleet” of tankers that Moscow uses to deliver its oil to the market.
This was reported to the Bloomberg agency by informed sources, “European Truth” writes.
According to Bloomberg, the new package of EU sanctions may be approved by the end of the year. It will contain measures against the “shadow fleet”, as well as persons involved in the illegal trade in Russian oil.
The EU is additionally working on a broader package of sanctions that it hopes to pass in early 2025 – possibly by the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine – when the EU presidency will pass from Hungary to Polandthe agency writes.
These sanctions may include further trade restrictions, as well as increased tariffs on Russian agricultural goods. Some EU countries also propose restrictions on trade in Russian liquefied gas, the article says.
In recent months, it has become increasingly difficult for the EU to get approval for sanctions packages, as Hungary often uses its veto power during negotiations. The last, the 14th package of sanctions, was introduced in June 2024.
