Brazil, which presides over the “Group of 20” and hosted the relevant summit this year, tried from the beginning to “derail” the Ukrainian agenda, and Kyiv’s calculations of support from Western partners did not come true. Ambassador of Ukraine to Brazil Andriy Melnyk told about this in an interview with Radio Liberty.

“As you understand, our forces are unequal here in relation not only to Brazil, but also to other states of the Global South. Therefore, we sincerely hoped that our friends not only from the G7, but also from other Western countries… would help to convince President (of Brazil – ed.) Lula to change this approach. But frankly (and this was confirmed by my conversations just the other day in Rio de Janeiro)… then, unfortunately… no one particularly fought for us,” the diplomat noted.

Commenting on the final declaration of the G20 summit, which did not contain a condemnation of the Russian invasion, the head of the diplomatic mission confirmed the media reports that the Western delegations did not try to change it.

“This is a big blow for us. Without any exaggeration. Those who had reservations, some of our friends, some, let’s say, friends from the “Big Seven” simply “swallowed” what was put on their table,” Melnyk stressed.

The official noted the “regression and rollback” in this year’s summit joint statement, a trend he said is deeply troubling.

“It is about the competition of these new states, which (I mean the Global South, in particular Brazil, which sees itself as one of the leaders of this movement) have thrown a real challenge to the Western world… Our American and European friends, if we are not quite diplomatic, rear And that hurts my heart,” Melnyk noted.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to Brazil noted that Ukraine should also change its approaches and strategy.

“We need to sit down and soberly reassess our capabilities: what we can do and what we can’t do, and show our teeth the same way. And our diplomacy now consists in running after everyone, you know, and asking: give it to us, do it to us… I hope that this summit in Rio will not be just an excuse to quarrel. It’s so bad that it’s like this… This is reality. She is very cruel. And it must be admitted that she is like that. And then calmly, with a clear head, determine the plan of action,” the diplomat summed up.

At the G20 summit, which was held this year in Brazil on November 18-19, a declaration was approved, in which it was noted that the G20 countries, in the context of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine, approve “all appropriate and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just and durable peace, supporting all goals and principles of the UN Charter”.
