Belgium Foreign Minister Maxim Pravo stated that the country would join a group of countries that recognize Palestine’s state at the UN General Assembly this month and impose sanctions against Israel because of the Gas War.

Details: The minister noted that this would happen only after Hamas released all the Israeli hostages captured during the attack on October 7, 2023, and the militants “will no longer play any role in Palestine’s management.”

Prevoy stated that Belgium’s sanctions would be “rigid” and include: a ban on import products from illegal settlements, review of public procurement from Israeli companies, restriction of consular assistance to Belgium citizens living in such settlements.

In addition, two Israeli ministers, several “cruel settlers” and Hamas leaders will be declared “Non Grat” in Belgium. Prevo did not specify the names of officials, however, according to the newspaper, it is probably about the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gwir and Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich, who are already under the sanctions of the United Kingdom and other countries for inciting violence against Palestinians on the West Jordan.

“It is not about sanctions against the Israeli people, but that their government would respect international and humanitarian law and take steps to try to change the situation on the ground,” Prevo said.

Literally: “Prevo has also advocated that the EU has suspended the Association Agreement with Israel. The European Commission has already proposed to limit its provisions on research and development, since Israel has violated human rights obligations. However, the initiative is still blocked through Germany’s position.”

Prehistory:

  • In July, French President Emmanuel Macron said France recognizes the Palestinian state at a UN meeting, which will take place from 9 to 23 September in New York, and more than a dozen other Western countries said they would do the same.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyaga has previously stated that this step nourishes anti-Semitism, “rewards Hamas’s horrible terrorism and punishes his victims.”
