Oleksandr Lukashenko voiced the idea during talks in the Kremlin with the dictator of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
“If they make a decision, we will start building a new power unit or even a new station – if there is a need for electricity in Western Russia or in” liberated territories, “Lukashenko said, using the terminology that Moscow denotes occupied parts of Ukraine.
Putin replied that “funding is not a problem at all. If there is a consumer who will take electricity and pay the tariff, then this is not a question.”
The proposal emphasizes close links between Putin and Lukashenko – despite the fact that US President Donald Trump tries to influence the Belarusian leader in parallel, offering a weakening of sanctions in exchange for the release of political prisoners and rapprochement with the West.
Belarus remains a close ally of Moscow and supports the war against Ukraine, in particular, giving its territory to invade Russian troops in 2022. Putin occurs with Lukashenko more often than with any other foreign leader.
