The official website of the airport indicated that the airspace would be closed by at least 02:45 local time.

“According to our information, such a decision was made because of the probable appearance of a number of balloons heading to Vilnius Airport,” the airport said on social networks.

“Currently, the airspace is closed, (…) the situation is changing every few minutes,” the representatives of Lithuanian Airports (Ltou) said after midnight.

The LTOU representative reported that the flights heading to Vilnius were redirected to the nearest airports in Kaunas and Riga (Latvia). Flightradar24.com data was also shown that at least one flight from Turkey was forced to land in Gdansk (Poland).

One of the passengers flying from Dublin to Vilnius told Lrt.lt that their plane landed in Riga. According to him, the pilot initially reported that there would be an attempt to return to Vilnius as soon as permission would come. However, an hour later, passengers were announced that a bus transfer from the capital of Latvia to Vilnius was organized for them.

This is not the first case of Vilnius Airport Violation through third -party air facilities.

On September 27, the Public Safety Service recorded three forbidden drones in the outskirts of the airport. A similar incident with the drone happened on August 21. In both cases, the flights were temporarily suspended and the planes were redirected to other airports.
