Axios sources claim that this has brought the next stage of negotiations closer – a meeting between Putin and Zelensky.
The official suggested that if the next trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi, scheduled for February 1, leads to more progress, it could lead to the parties meeting in Moscow or Kyiv – something that hasn’t happened in years.
“Both Putin and Zelensky agreed to send their negotiators. This shows that they believe in making progress,” said one of the American officials.
In Abu Dhabi, the parties discussed a wide range of issues – Russia’s territorial claims in Donbas, the dispute over the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, and what de-escalation steps will be necessary on both sides to make it clear that the war is over and will not resume.
“We saw a lot of respect in the room because they were really looking for solutions,” said one US official.
At the same time, a Ukrainian official said that while “significant progress” has been made, it is still unclear whether Putin really wants to end the war and whether he will give his negotiators the authority to conclude a deal.
We will remind: As reported, tripartite talks between the USA, Ukraine and Russia took place in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24.
The media reported that the parties had made progress in military matters.
It should be noted that before the start of the negotiations, the press secretary of the ruler of the Russian Federation, Dmytro Peskov, stated that the Kremlin insists on the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Donbas, as it seems to be an important condition for negotiations on ending the war.
