Wong is currently visiting Kyiv. According to the head of the Australian Foreign Ministry, the embassy will fully resume work in the coming months.
“We always said we would do it when it was safe. We have been working on security measures to make this possible and I am very pleased to be here to announce the opening of the Australian Embassy. Starting next month, our ambassador Paul Lehmann, who is here with us, will work in Kyiv. And in the coming months, our embassy will be operating at full capacity,” said Wong.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiga welcomed the decision to resume the work of the embassy. He thanked the Australian side, calling it a “manifestation of true solidarity with Ukraine.”
“This is always a significant factor in the development of bilateral relations. This is always an opportunity for the ambassador to get first-hand information. This is always an opportunity to grow direct communications. Therefore, of course, this is an important step for the reasons that it is a manifestation of true solidarity with Ukraine. That Australian diplomats, Australian friends share all those challenges, all those difficulties that the Ukrainian people are experiencing. Therefore, it is also extremely important for these reasons,” said Sybiga.

Wong also said that Australia is unwavering in its support for the people of Ukraine.
“Australia stands with you and I hope I can come back here and see a peaceful, stable Ukraine that has ended this war on your own terms,” Wong added.
Diplomatic offices were moving their offices from Kyiv – mostly to western Ukraine – in the run-up to the full-scale Russian invasion, as well as after it began on February 24, 2022. In June of the same year, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced that half a hundred embassies had resumed work.
