Details: According to the publication, the Australian government, together with the administration of US President Joe Biden, is working on a plan to send American-made Abrams M1A1 tanks to Ukraine.
At the same time, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles says that “there are a number of possibilities that we are talking about with the government of Ukraine.”
Australian government sources said Marles was studying how to make the tank shipments comply with US defense export regulations.
At the same time, Australia previously excluded the possibility of providing this equipment to Kyiv.
In July, Australia reportedly scrapped 59 Abrams M1A1 tanks that had never been used in combat and are now being replaced by newer models. Purchased for $550 million in 2004, these combat vehicles are equipped with cannons and machine guns.
A former high-ranking official of the Ministry of Defense of Australia, Michael Shoebridge, commented on the situation: “These tanks are still in good shape. The Ukrainians are fighting a war for national survival, so we have to get them there as soon as possible.”
Earlier, Ukraine appealed to Australia with an official request to join the United States, Great Britain, Poland and Germany and provide tanks for protection against Russian aggression.
