“The President of the European Council called the leaders of the European Council for dinner tonight to discuss transatlantic relations. This topic is relevant, despite the positive news last night,” said the interlocutor of “EvroPravda”.
He emphasized that Greenland and trade threats from the US will still be at the center of the discussion, but “in a more positive context than 24 hours ago.”
After the threat of tariffs has been removed from the agenda, “issues regarding Greenland remain that need to be resolved,” the EU official stated.
“Yesterday, President Kosta spoke with the Secretary General of NATO, who provided him with information about what was agreed upon with President Trump. As far as we understand, a two-pronged approach was agreed upon in the conversation with President Trump,” he said.
The first area is the relationship between the United States, Denmark and Greenland under the defense treaty that exists between Denmark and the United States.
The second direction is the strengthening and activation of NATO’s role in ensuring security in the Arctic.
“This still needs further processing. For us, the main thing is that during the conversation, President Trump said that any military threat to Greenland is not considered.” – stressed the interlocutor of “EvroPravda”.
The leaders will also pay close attention to the invitation received by the United States from the European countries to join the Peace Council, which is being created by President Trump, and may decide on a joint response to it.
“Among other issues that need to be discussed is the discussion regarding Ukraine in the context of the peace plan,” the EU official said.
He emphasized that right now it was important for the President of the European Council, Antonio Košta, “to bring the leaders together to discuss the situation and form a common understanding of the new – unstable – reality that has emerged.”
As “Evropeyska Pravda” reported, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced in Davos trilateral negotiations Ukraine-USA-Russia in the United Arab Emirateswhich should take place on January 23-24.
It will be recalled that the President of the United States, Donald Trump called a “very good” meeting with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi in Davos on Thursday.
Trump also said that at the meeting with Zelensky, they did not discuss Ukraine’s potential membership in the Peace Council he is creating – which he has not joined yet none of the traditional Western European allies USA.
