Former Mayor of Kherson Volodymyr Mykolaenko has been in Russian captivity since April 2022. According to the family of Nikolaenka, he went to a meeting with a friend – after that the connection with him broke off.
In May 2022, the Russian edition of Izvestia published a video where Vladimir Mykolaenko, when communicating with a Russian journalist, refused to tell the camera, that the UPA commander Roman Shukhevych fought for Nazi Germany. Instead, he stressed that Shukhevych was fighting for Ukraine.
According to Sister Nikolaenka, immediately after a full -scale invasion of Kherson Nikolaenko, he joined the territorial defense. After the detention, the Russian soldiers tried to bow to cooperation, but he refused, she said. In her opinion, the illegal detention and abduction of her brother are directly related to his pro -Ukrainian position.
