The Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police detained in Kyiv and Ivano-Frankivsk three more suspects in setting fire to military vehicles and branches of Ukrposhta on the order of the special services of the Russian Federation, the SBU press service reported on December 23.

“A 41-year-old auto mechanic of the capital’s service station was detained in Kyiv, who, on the order of the FSB, set fire to the local office of Ukrposhta and two Ukrainian military vehicles. In order to “covertly” commit arson, the suspect used gasoline, which he drained from the tanks of private cars that were being serviced by him, as an incendiary mixture,” the post states.

A 15-year-old resident of the capital was also detained, who, according to law enforcement officers, set fire to another post office.

“An enemy henchman was detained in Prykarpattia, who burned a military car that was brought in for repair after completing combat missions at the front. According to the investigation, the suspect was a 36-year-old gambler from the regional center. Previously, the man was already prosecuted for theft of private property,” the SBU says.

As the investigation established, the man agreed to cooperate with the special services of the Russian Federation in order to top up his online casino account.

The suspects are in custody. They face up to 10 years in prison.

In nine months of 2024, the police detained 179 people who committed arson on the order of the special services of the Russian Federation, Deputy Head of the National Police Andrii Nebitov said. According to the police, the vehicles of the military, railway infrastructure and state enterprises were set ablaze.

Earlier, RFE/RL’s investigative project “Schemy” found that Russian special services are massively using minor Ukrainians to set fire to the cars of the Armed Forces and TCC buildings as part of a disinformation campaign of the Russian Federation, the purpose of which is to show that there is an active underground in Ukraine, which in this way opposes general mobilization.
