Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken signed a strategic partnership agreement in Washington, the Armenian service of Radio Liberty reports.

“We are creating a strategic partnership commission that includes expanding cooperation in the areas of the economy, security and defense, democracy, inclusiveness and interpersonal relations,” announced Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

In addition, Blinken announced that the US is working with Armenia to strengthen efforts to protect the country’s sovereignty. According to him, a special border group from the USA will arrive in Armenia next week to conduct joint border protection operations.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan thanked Washington for its efforts that “support the integrity of the sovereign territory of Armenia and the independence of Armenia.”

Mirzoyan also stated that Yerevan is ready to work with the new state administration.

Regarding the agreement, he noted that it covers many areas, including strengthening economic and energy ties, communications, deepening cooperation in the field of defense and security, strengthening democratic institutions, promoting justice and the rule of law, developing innovation and high technology, and expanding human potential.

“We are also beginning negotiations on a nuclear cooperation agreement with the United States, known as the ‘123 Agreement.’ It will provide a framework for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and will mark our commitment to the peaceful development of nuclear energy with the highest standards of safety and non-proliferation,” he said.

At the beginning of January, the National Assembly of Armenia approved the draft law on the beginning of the process of the country’s accession to the European Union. Prime Minister of the country Nikol Pashinyan emphasized that a referendum should be held on this issue.
