Details: According to the embassy’s statement, the American side canceled the invitation to Kobakhidze and refused to meet with the Georgian delegation “due to the anti-democratic actions of the Georgian government, misinformation and negative rhetoric directed at the United States and the West.”

Biden will host world leaders and senior UN officials at a traditional reception in New York on September 25.

The media previously reported that Kobakhidze, who heads the Georgian delegation to the UN General Assembly, was initially on the list of invitees to receive the president, but the Biden administration canceled the invitation.

We will remind:

  • On September 16, the USA announced sanctions against two officials and two private individuals from Georgia, in particular, in connection with the violent crackdown on peaceful protests against the scandalous law on “foreign agents”.
  • The head of special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia Zviad Kharazishvili and his deputy Mileri Lagazauri were sanctioned.
  • Also, these are the leaders of the pro-Russian party and the Alt-info movement, Koka Morgoshia and Zura Maharadze, who were placed under restrictions “for suppressing the freedom of peaceful assembly of Georgians.” Alt-info is known for attacking events of the LGBT community.
  • In addition, the opposition TV channel Formula, citing its sources, reported that the EU has allegedly reached an agreement among member states to suspend visa-free travel for Georgian citizens after the parliamentary elections in the event of a further deterioration of the situation with respect for democratic principles. The Prime Minister called these rumors “cheap blackmail”.
