There were 16 crew members on the dry cargo ship Ursa Major – 14 sailors were brought to the port of Cartagena, two are considered missing. The ship was heading between St. Petersburg and Vladivostok.

According to The Maritime Executive, the explosion occurred in the engine room.

The ship was operated by a subsidiary of the Russian defense company Oboronlogistika, which is under sanctions.

The press release of the Oboronlogistics company stated that the vessel embarked on another voyage to the Far East with a large project cargo as part of the implementation of state tasks regarding the development of port infrastructure and the Northern Sea Route.”

OSINT analyst Oliver Alexander reported on his page on the X social network that the Russian dry cargo was carrying two Liebherr mobile cranes for the port of Vladivostok, which is heavily loaded due to a lack of cranes, as well as two 45-ton hatches for the construction of a new project 10510 nuclear icebreaker.

“The loss of these cranes will seriously affect loading/unloading times in Vladivostok,” the analyst noted.

The loss of the hatches will significantly delay the construction of the icebreaker, according to the expert.
