Police said the man used his fingernail to carve letters on a wooden torii post, a traditional gate that is part of a holy complex. The arrest occurred after the man arrived in Japan with his family for sightseeing.
The incident was part of a wider problem of indecent behavior among tourists, which has come amid a record influx of foreign visitors.
In 2023, Japan received almost 27 million tourists, which significantly strengthened the country’s economy. However, the increasing number of cases of vandalism, public drunkenness and violations at shrines has prompted discussion of new measures to control the behavior of tourists.
