Albania has announced a one-year ban on TikTok following the killing of a teenager last month, which raised concerns about the social media’s impact on children. This is reported by Reuters. The ban, which is part of a wider plan to improve school safety, will come into effect in early 2025, Prime Minister Edi Rama said after meeting with parents’ groups and teachers from across the country. “For one year, we will completely shut it down for everyone. There will be no TikTok in Albania,” Rama said.Advertisement: Rama accused social media, particularly TikTok, of fueling violence among young people in school and beyond. His government’s decision came after a 14-year-old schoolboy was stabbed to death by a classmate in November. Local media reported that the incident happened after an argument between two boys on social media. Videos of minors supporting the murder have also appeared on TikTok. “The problem today is not our children, the problem today is us, the problem today is our society, the problem today is TikTok and everyone else who is taking our children hostage,” Rama said.Advertisement: TikTok said it is seeking “urgent solutions” clarification” from the Albanian government. “We found no evidence that either the perpetrator or the victim had TikTok accounts, and multiple reports confirm that the videos that led to this incident were posted on a platform other than TikTok,” a company spokesperson said.
