According to three informed officials, the incident is considered as surgery of Russian intervention.

“GPS stopped working throughout the airport area,” one of the officials said.

After an hour of spinning over the airport, the pilot of the aircraft made the decision to land by hand using paper cards, they added.

“It was an indisputable intervention,” one of the sources added.

The Bulgarian Air Traffic Office confirmed the incident in a statement for Financial Times.

“Since February 2022, there has been a significant increase in muffling cases (GPS) and, recently, signal counterfeiting,” the statement said.

As noted in the department, such obstacles violate the accuracy of receiving GPS signal, which leads to various operating problems for aircraft and land systems.

Von Der Lyen flew to Plovdiv from Warsaw to meet with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Rosen Zhelazkov and to visit the ammunition factory.

After the visit, the head of the European Commission without incidents left the float on the same aircraft.

Estonia has previously said that obstruction of GPS signals is a violation of international law by Russia.

Recently, 13 EU countries have called on the European Commission to take measures in connection with the interruptions of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in the Community.
