Jack O’Brien was handballed in his own penalty area midway through the first half and, after a VAR review, referee Samuel Barrott awarded a penalty to Everton. Viktor Djokeres took the shot and executed it, punching powerfully almost in the center of the goal – Pickford could not deflect the ball.
In the second half, Arsenal could have doubled their advantage: Rice made a perfect pass to Trossard, who found himself on the left of the penalty area and shot into the far corner, but the ball hit the right post.
The visitors take three points from Liverpool and return to the top of the league, displacing Manchester City. “Toffees” remain in the middle of the table in the 10th position.
Vitaly Mykolenko played the entire match for Everton and received a yellow card for talking after the penalty.
