“Max Purcell was eliminated for using a “forbidden method””, — write: sport.ua
The Australian was disqualified by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for using a “prohibited method” in the anti-doping rules.
Max pleaded guilty and asked for a temporary disqualification while the case is pending. The suspension took effect on December 12. The final terms of suspension will be determined later.
In 2022, Purcell won his first major trophy, becoming the Wimbledon doubles champion. And in 2024, he won the US Open. In the singles ranking, he occupies the 105th position.
Max Purcell has already issued a statement on his Instagram regarding his doping case:
“As ITIA announced today, I have voluntarily accepted a temporary suspension because I unknowingly received an intravenous injection of vitamins in a dosage that exceeded the legal limit of 100ml.
Until last week, when I received the medical records from the clinic showing the excess volume of the drip, I was fully convinced that I had done everything to ensure compliance with WADA’s rules and procedures. But the records show that the volume of the dropper was greater than 100ml, even though I told the clinic that I was a professional athlete and needed the volume to be less than 100ml.
This news shocked me because I pride myself on always following WADA rules. I volunteered this information to ITIA and was as transparent as possible to put this whole situation behind me. I look forward to the opportunity to return to the court soon.”
This is not the first doping scandal in 2024 surrounding famous tennis players. Previously, Iga Sveontek and Jannik Sinner had problems with ITIA and WADA.
