Al-Sharaa, 43, walked down Pennsylvania Avenue to greet dozens of supporters after the roughly 90-minute meeting in the Oval Office, which was closed to the press. An al-Sharaa support group held signs calling on Congress to permanently lift the sanctions, which the Trump administration temporarily lifted earlier this year.
“He is a very strong leader. He comes from a very difficult place and is a tough man. I liked him. I get along with him,” Trump told reporters after the meeting.
Direct speech Trump: “We will do everything in our power to make Syria successful, because it is part of the Middle East. Now there is peace in the Middle East.”
Details: Trump acknowledged that al-Sharaa had a “complicated past,” but added, “We’ve all had complicated pasts.”
Syria’s interim government released photos of the meeting in the Oval Office, showing al-Sharaa sitting next to Vice President J.D. Vance, who served in Iraq during the war, while the guest of honor planted roadside bombs there as a member of al-Qaeda.
The conversation was devoted to “a number of regional and international issues of common interest,” the Syrian side said in a statement.
The publication adds that the White House did not immediately publish a report on the meeting.
Al-Sharaa was escorted by a large motorcade of law enforcement through the streets of Washington, and he entered the West Wing through a side entrance after meeting with Republicans in Congress.
What preceded: The expected visit of the Syrian leader to Washington became known on Saturday.
Trump already met with Ahmed al-Sharaa in May.
