A US official said the missile used in the strike was not an ICBM but an “experimental intermediate-range ballistic missile” and Russia “probably only has a few such experimental missiles.”
The fact that Russia launched a medium-range ballistic missile, and not an ICBM, over Ukraine was also reported by a US representative to the Reuters agency, referring to the initial signs.
“Ukraine has withstood countless attacks from Russia, including missiles with warheads much larger than this weapon,” a US official told AFP.
According to the official, in recent days the United States has informed Ukraine and its allies about the possible use of these weapons by Russia.
The American official also recalled that US President Joe Biden earlier this year announced plans to provide Ukraine with hundreds of Patriot and AMRAAM missiles to strengthen its air defenses.
