At around 11am on Thursday, PayPal stopped working properly and users are unable to access their funds.
The company’s status page says it experienced a “system issue” that caused problems in various parts of PayPal, including the ability to withdraw funds or use the Express Checkout tool.
The problems also affected PayPal’s cryptocurrency offering and the online money-sending apps Xoom and Venmo.
Other parts of PayPal — such as Zettle, the small card machines used by many merchants to make sales — worked as expected, the page said.
The Down Detector website recorded a huge spike in people reporting problems around midday.
In about two hours, PayPal said it had fixed a system issue that affected several products in the company’s production environment. The company reported experiencing a significant number of service failures, which vendors reported as “HTTP 500 error for REST API calls.”
The incident raised concerns among PayPal’s large user base, particularly among the merchant community that relies on its services to process payments.
