A unique find was handed over to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine – a sword from the time of Kievan Rus and two axes that were accidentally discovered near Radomyshl in Zhytomyr Oblast.
As reported on the institution’s Facebook page, Viktor Moshchenko and his daughter Nataliya made such a gift to the museum.
The artifact dates back to the second half of the 10th – the beginning of the 11th century. This type of weapon was used by the Varangian wives of the Kiev princes. The site of the find is symbolic, since Radomyshl (ancient Mykhorod) belonged to the lands of the Drevlians, an independent union of tribes with a strong economy and fortified cities such as Iskorosten, Ovruch, and Malyn.

Despite the fact that the iron is in a state of significant corrosion, restorers note the extraordinary scientific value of the object. Restorer Yurii But highlighted several key details:

Buterol: Scabbard tip, which is rarely preserved with the blade. It is made of bronze and decorated with silver inlay.

Handles and crossbars: These elements have been preserved surprisingly well. They have a unique decoration made with silver and copper plating, and the ornament contains the image of crosses.
Archaeologist Serhii Didenko emphasized the importance of knowing the exact location of the find. Since the sword was sheathed, experts believe it came from an ancient burial or ruined barrow. In the near future, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, together with the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, plans to conduct a detailed survey of the location to search for other possible artifacts or remains of the burial complex.
Also, during the excavations, archaeologists found artifacts from the times of Kyivan Rus.
