The depths of our planet keep many secrets. A group of geologists, studying the lower part of the Earth’s mantle under the Pacific Ocean, came across unusual structures, the nature of which still remains a mystery.
Using data on seismic waves, scientists have identified areas where these waves behave unusually. This indicates the presence of materials with anomalous properties — colder or having a different composition than the surrounding rocks.
“We faced a dilemma,” admits Thomas Schouten, lead author of the study. “On the one hand, we have data indicating the presence of these structures, but on the other hand, we cannot say exactly what they are and how they were formed.”
One of the main mysteries is the origin of these structures. If they were in other regions of the planet, they could be explained by the remnants of ancient tectonic plates submerged in the mantle. However, the Pacific Ocean is one large plate, so such an explanation does not fit here.
Scientists put forward several hypotheses about the nature of these structures. Perhaps these are the remains of ancient material that was formed at the early stages of the Earth’s history. Or it is the result of complex processes occurring in the mantle for billions of years.
“We believe that these anomalies have different origins,” explains Schouten. “These can be both ancient structures and younger formations that arose as a result of convective movements in the mantle.”
However, in order to give a definitive answer to this question, additional research is needed. Scientists plan to use more advanced models and analyze new data to better understand the nature of these mysterious structures.
The discovery of these unusual formations in the bowels of the Earth highlights how little we know about our planet. It opens up new horizons for research and may lead to a revision of existing theories about the internal structure of the Earth.
