In Lviv, the “Homin” municipal choir held a mourning carol in memory of Ukrainian defenders who died due to Russian aggression. Instead of festive singing, sad carols sounded – old and new, written already during the war. The event became an act of joint memory and silence, and not a concert in the usual sense, the Lviv City Council reports.
The choir performed a specially prepared repertoire of mournful carols. These were both old songs that have existed in our tradition for tens and hundreds of years, as well as new works created after the start of a full-scale war. Among them are carols written under the impression of battles and losses, including songs about Bakhmut and other destroyed cities.
The artistic director of the Choir “Homin” Vadym Yatsenko explained that in Ukrainian culture there have always been not only joyful, but also sad carols. “There are many carols in Ukrainian culture, including sad ones. They have existed for a long time, but among those that sound today, there are carols written already during this war – for example, “There in Bakhmut”, – he noted.
According to him, some of the works performed by the choir were performed a hundred years ago – during the liberation struggle of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. “The layer of mournful carols in our culture is very wide. We travel a lot around the world, popularize Ukrainian music, but we understand: there are more important things. And this event is one of them,” Yatsenko emphasized.
