In the Russian city of Irkutsk, a memorial complex was opened to the mercenaries of the Wagner PMC group, who died in the war against Ukraine. City Duma deputy Mykhailo Kudryavtsev announced this in his Telegram channel.

Several dozen black pyramids resembling anti-tank structures were installed at the Oleksandrovsky cemetery. Also, a pedestal for the future monument to Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the “Wagner” Communist Party, and one of the commanders of the group, Dmytro Utkin, was installed at the cemetery. The monument itself is planned to be opened in 2025.

The publication “Irsity” noted that about 100-150 people gathered for the opening, many of them were in military uniform.

The official opening of the memorial, which will be attended by local officials, is scheduled for January 18.

In the war against Ukraine, more than 20,000 mercenaries of the “Wagner” PMC died, most of them were recruited prisoners. This is stated in a joint investigation by “Mediazona” and the Russian service of the BBC. The publications claim that they have gained access to documents on payments to the relatives of the dead mercenaries. They list more than 20,000 people killed between January 2022 and August 2023.

Mercenaries who returned from the war alive, periodically commit serious crimes. Participation in the invasion of Ukraine is credited to them as a mitigating circumstance.

On November 10, a memorial to the mercenaries of the “Wagner” PMC and a monument to its founder Yevhen Prigozhin and Dmytro Utkin were opened at the Husynobrod cemetery in Novosibirsk. Similar monuments were also opened in Samara region and Krasnodar region.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the “Wagner” PMC, died on August 23, 2023, during the crash of a private plane in the Tver region. At the same time, one of the commanders of the group, Dmytro Utkin, died.

Two months before Prigozhin’s death, Prigozhin and his mercenaries attempted an armed coup against the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense, during which several helicopters and one Russian army plane were shot down. Crews died.
