“The prosecutor’s office of Georgia signed a procedural agreement with the accused Irakli Garibashvili, according to which the former prime minister was sentenced to 5 years in prison for the crime provided for in part 3 of article 194 of the Criminal Code of Georgia,” the prosecutor’s office said.
As an additional punishment, he was ordered to pay a fine of 1 million GEL (over $370,000).
“He will also be deprived for the benefit of the state of those funds that were obtained as a result of criminal activity and that were seized during the search of his place of residence. Irakliy Garibashvili admits guilt in committing the crime and agrees to the terms of the plea agreement,” added the prosecutor’s office.
The court granted the request of the prosecutor’s office to enter into a plea agreement.
Garibashvili served as prime minister from 2021 to 2024 and previously, from 2013 to 2015, was a close ally of billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, who many consider the de facto ruler of Georgia.
Garibashvili was charged with legalization of criminal income in a particularly large amount, which threatened him with imprisonment for up to 12 years.
It was claimed that as a result of the search on October 17, 2025, 6.5 million US dollars were found and seized in Garibashvili’s apartment.
Garibashvili spent almost his entire career working for Ivanishvili’s companies before entering politics with the Georgian Dream party, later joining the opposition. The case against Garibashvili is the first case of prosecution a key member of the ruling elite countries
