Law enforcement officers of the Chernivtsi region detained a foreign carrier who tried to smuggle seven Ukrainians of military age across the state border, hiding them among boxes of alcohol.
As reported by the Bukovyna prosecutor’s office on January 12, the truck driver expected that the sealed trailer with beer would not be subject to a thorough inspection when crossing the Mamalyga checkpoint. However, during the inspection of the vehicle at the border with Moldova, border guards discovered a group of conscripts who were trying to avoid mobilization.
The investigation established that for its services, the private carrier set a tariff in the amount of €6,000 to €13,000 for each person, and the total amount of funds seized during the detention amounted to €34,000. The foreigner used his status as an official international carrier as a cover for criminal activity, hoping for formal control of the cargo. Currently, the perpetrator has been notified of suspicion under the article on illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine, which provides for a long prison term with confiscation of property.
This incident became another example of strengthening control at the borders of Ukraine in the conditions of martial law and active attempts by the Russian Federation to destabilize the internal situation due to the spread of illegal exit schemes. All seven passengers, who tried to escape to Moldova, were detained administratively; after establishing all the circumstances, their data will be transferred to the territorial picking centers. Strengthening security measures at checkpoints is part of the Ministry of Interior’s comprehensive strategy to combat organized smuggling networks.
