According to the National Audubon Society, it can reach speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour. This is the highest speed ever recorded. However, scientists believe that they can move even faster and develop a speed comparable to the speed of a bullet train (320 km per hour), writes IFL Science.
This impressive feat makes the peregrine falcon the fastest animal in the world, but only when “diving”. In flight, it is quickly overtaken by a Brazilian free-tailed bat – it accelerates to 160 km/h.
Why does a peregrine falcon dive?It turns out that this is an integral part of his hunting strategy. A peregrine falcon is a bird of prey that dives to strike its prey in the air. They mostly feed on other birds.
The peregrine falcon is a “global” bird that lives on all continents except Antarctica. Three subspecies occur in North America: American, or continental, peregrine falcon, tundra, or arctic, peregrine falcon, and Saw’s peregrine falcon. These birds usually live in mountain ranges.
