A 31-year-old fighter from Mykolaiv died in the war

The Ukrainian sports family suffered another loss. On January 4, 2026, Serhiy Shumilov, a Greco-Roman wrestling student of the integrated children’s and youth school No. 1 in the city of Mykolaiv, died while defending the independence of Ukraine.

Serhii Shumilov was born in 1994 in Mykolaiv. He is a repeated winner and prize-winner of all-Ukrainian and international competitions, a candidate for master of sports, a graduate of the Mykolaiv Higher School of Physical Culture.

With the beginning of a full-scale war, Serhii changed his wrestling leotard to a military uniform. Until his last breath, the soldier remained faithful to his oath, giving the most valuable thing for our freedom – his life.

Serhii Shumilov is survived by his mother and a small son, who will now grow up without a father.
