Marseille made up for their recent setbacks in front of their fans by thrashing Rennes 3-0 to secure a place in the top eight of the French Cup.

The Provencals opened the scoring in the first minute of the match. Timothy Weah intercepted the ball high in the opponent’s half of the field and found Amin Guiri with a pass, who coolly realized the moment. Immediately after the break, Mason Greenwood doubled the home team’s lead with an assist from Guiry. For the English forward, this is already the 22nd goal in all competitions this season, which confirms his fantastic form. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put an end to the match, scoring the third goal 10 minutes before the final whistle.

Despite the sure victory, the game had its dark side. In the first half, there was an episode that caused the indignation of Rennes players. Ethan Nwaneri, who plays for Marseille on loan from Arsenal in London, made a hard tackle on Glen Kamara. The referee limited himself to only a yellow card for the 18-year-old midfielder, although the opponents demanded a dismissal. As a result of this collision, Kamara was injured and had to leave the field limping.

Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi was satisfied with the result, especially after the painful defeat by Brugge (0:3) in the Champions League and the draw with Paris (2:2).

“We were solid… It was important to win this game, but I always say that my team can beat anyone if they play like today. But we can also lose to anyone. Unfortunately, the match against Club Brugge still leaves scars,” admitted the Italian specialist.

Marseille now face a huge test against league leaders PSG this weekend. The team needs to win to keep even a ghostly chance of the Ligue 1 title.
