Despite the defeat, the coach was satisfied with the pattern of the game and the number of created moments, but he called the lack of skill in the final stage of attacks the main reason for the failure.
According to the coach, his wards showed good speed in both halves and regularly attacked, but the team’s efforts were nullified by errors in the last pass.
“We created enough opportunities, but, unfortunately, we did not deliver the ball to the end zone. In the second half, we reorganized a little, focused on this… The attack increased, but there were no quality passes into the penalty area,” Kostiuk noted.
The coach also revealed the tactical details of the match preparation. The staff studied the opponent’s statistics and bet on the beginning of the second half, when Fiorentina usually loses physically.
“Statistics is a stubborn thing. It gave us a reason to play more aggressively. We took advantage of this, seized the initiative, scored a goal and had many prerequisites for high-speed attacks,” explained the expert.
Finally, the coach commented on the debut in the European Cups of the young Kyiv defender, Vladyslav Zakharchenko.
“Overall, he played solidly except when there were crosses in the penalty area, and Dzeko’s anthropometry and Keane’s pressure allowed Fiorentina score the first goal and create the second goal. But I believe that this is a great experience for Zakharchenko, and he managed it, and he had no worries. He played like an experienced player – concluded Kostyuk.
