Newcastle were one step away from making a complete comeback in Leverkusen, but instead had to settle for a draw in the sixth leg of the main round. Bayer avoided defeat thanks to Alejandro Grimaldo’s late strike to make it 2-2 in the 88th minute.

The hosts opened the scoring after a Bruno Guimaraes own goal, but the Magpies seized the initiative after the break: first, Anthony Gordon confidently converted a penalty, and then assisted 19-year-old Lewis Miley, who scored his first goal in the Champions League.

Bayer pressed until the final whistle and were rewarded – Grimaldo successfully completed the combination and saved his team from defeat.
