While Jamie Carragher urged Salah to “come out and speak for the team” instead of hiding behind Virgil van Dijk, Heskey takes a different view.
Heskey admitted that as a senior player, Salah must take responsibility, but stressed that the Egyptian was never the same type of leader as the legendary Steven Gerrard.
“He’s not the type of leader that maybe Jamie Carragher or Steven Gerrard was. People like Virgil van Dijk or even Curtis Jones will come out and talk and deal with the situation directly – that’s not about Salah. Even when he was at his peak, I don’t think he talked much,” said the striker.
Arne Slott’s side are going through a difficult period in the 2025/26 season, having won just one of their last five matches in all competitions. The Reds drew 1-1 with Sunderland on Wednesday and are currently 8th in the Premier League.
Salah, who led the team to the title last season (29 goals and 18 assists), has looked a pale shadow of his former self this campaign and has started the last two matches on the bench.
Heskey also added that the club is likely already preparing for a future without its main star:
“I would be surprised if they haven’t been preparing for this since the start of the season… It will be a big change for Liverpool when Salah is no longer playing on a regular basis,” the legend stressed.
The team will have the next chance to rectify the situation on Saturday in an away match against Leeds.
