The Portuguese’s statement came after the publication of a shocking investigation by the BBC and the analytics company Signify. The figures showed that over 2,000 highly offensive messages (including death and rape threats) were recorded against Premier League coaches and players in just one weekend last month. Amorim, along with Arne Slot and Eddie Howe, led this sad anti-rating.
Amorim noted that ignoring the media space is the only effective protection in modern realities.
“I don’t read it; I protect myself. I don’t even watch TV when they talk about Manchester United. Not because I don’t agree with the criticism – mostly I agree – but it’s a way to stay healthy. My own feelings as a coach are enough, I don’t need someone else’s negativity,” explained the coach.
The coach also emphasized that he deliberately makes financial sacrifices for the sake of peace of mind: I lose money from sponsors.
“I could make a lot of money on Instagram, but protecting my family and having a normal life is not worth any extra dollars or pounds,” he added.
The wave of hatred against Amorim is reinforced by the disastrous results of the team. United finished 15th last season (their worst finish since 1974) and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.
The current season has also been full of disappointments, with an exit from the League Cup at the hands of lowly Grimsby Town and only 7th in the table ahead of the crucial match against West Ham.
“No one can be harsher on me than I am when we lose. But such violence has become the norm in our time, so isolation is the only way to survive in this world,” Amorim concluded.
